Referendum for secession
Some 3,932,588 voters were registered on the lists for this historic referendum held from 9 to 15 January 2011. Approximately 96% of the voters exercised their right to vote. According to data from the AFP, the option in favour of the independence of South Sudan had already gathered 2,198,422 votes. These preliminary results crediting independence about 99% of the vote, a figure which should however be confirmed (Coligni, 2011, 16)

In Unity State oil, more than 471,000 voters out of 472,000 ballots counted favoured secession, while in the neighbouring state of Bahar al-Ghazal, 264,473 of 265,450 (99.6%) opted for independence, according to partial preliminary results with local commissions. (Coligni, 2011, 27)
