General context- How it all started?
The Darfur Genocide started in February 2003, when the Justice and
Equality Movement (JEM) and the Sudanese Liberation Army (SLA) started
rebellions. They accused the government of oppressing non-Arabs and preferring
the Arabs one. The government neglected and abandoned the Darfur region in West
Sudan because they were not Arabs.
The Sudanese government replied to these rebellions by bombarding villages, raping woman and destroying all the villages. The Arab militias known as Janjaweed made these destructions. With the Sudanese Military, they have burnt down villages and displaced over 2.8 million of people. They have killed over 480,000 people. (World without genocide, 2012) The amount of people killed being so high this is why it was associated with genocide.
This genocide is clearly carried by government and pro-government militia called the Janjaweed. Those tensions between Arab herders and the African farmers in Darfur have existed previously. But, before the Sudanese government interfered by violence, the ‘’two groups lived side by side, worked out their differences and even intermarried.’’ (Hagan J, Rymond-Richmond W, and Parker P, 2005) The government literally transformed the tensions between these two peoples ending it by violence, war and death.
