The republic of Sudan is an Arab state in North Africa, bordered by Egypt, Ethiopia, the Red Sea, Eritrea, South Sudan, Chad and Libya. It is the largest country in Africa and one of the poorest.

Sudan suffers from several challenges such as ethnic conflict and has been afflicted by internal conflicts including two civil wars and the War in the Darfur region known as the Darfur genocide. Sudan suffers from insignificant human rights, principally dealing with the matters of ethnic minorities and slavery in the region.

This conflict established racial and ethnic disparities. A lot of groups, that were previously neutral, are now forced, in a certain way, to position themselves in the middle of these rebellions.
They have to cooperate with the rebel movements or the government’s side and its Janjaweed. It is not possible to stay neutral in this type of situation. (Human rights watch, 2004)
